The lynch mob was clearly motivated to finish its job, so we can safely assume that none of the victims in the video escaped alive after the camera stopped recording.

Maki Skosana (c. 1961 – July 20, 1985) was a black South African woman who was burned to death and the footage broadcast live on South Africa's state-run television. She was killed by a mob of anti-apartheid activists who suspected her of being an informant. Her death by "necklacing" elicted outrage beyond the nation. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission has identified Skosana as the first known victim of necklacing, although it is more likely that she was not the first such death, only the first filmed.

Skosana's death occurred in the town of Duduza, west of Nigel in Gauteng's East Rand. Skosana, a suspected police informant, was killed for her alleged involvement in the deaths of four youth activists. Their deaths were reportedly planned by the "Third Force": a so-called secretive group of government operatives responsible for running the township resistance. Hundreds of people attended both funerals, with the crowds shown live on television.

She was killed while attending the funeral of a friend who was one of four activists murdered because she was presumed to be a police informant. Although it was Joe Mamasela who was the leader of his superiors (including Jack Cronje, Johan van der Merwe, Johann Coetzee, and even at the time Their deaths were planned under the command of President PW Botha, but this was because of an assumption that Skosana was linked to the explosion that killed them.

After the funeral, a mob of 500 people chased Skosana from the cemetery through the fields. The thugs grabbed her, beat her with sticks, knocked her to the ground and kicked her until she was half-conscious and half-naked. A big rock fell on her, preventing her from getting up. They put a tire around her neck, doused her with gasoline and set her on fire.

Skosana's sister, Evelyn Moloko, said that Skosana was killed when a tire was thrown around her neck while attending the funeral of one of the young men. Moloko told the committee that her body was scorched by fire and pieces of broken glass were inserted into her vagina. Moloko added that after her sister was killed, a large rock was thrown in her face.
