Talip Akkurt, known by his nom de guerre Abu Talha al Turki, was among Islamic State thugs who filmed themselves burning two soldiers after capturing them in Aleppo in 2015. US-backed Syrian Defense Forces (SDF) reportedly killed the ISIS executioner al Turki in a June 7 attack in Hajin, a small city in eastern Syria. He was on the Turkish police force’s ‘Blue List’ of wanted fugitives, with a bounty of 1.5million Turkish lira (£243,000) on his head.

News of his death has been posted online, including by the Maryland Coordination and Analysis Center in America, which shares information relating to terrorism.

Al Turki and two other Turkish accomplices – Hasan Aydin and Muhittin Buyukyangoz, who remain at large and still have a bounty on their heads – were members of the ‘Yasar Group’, an Islamic State execution team composed of Turks. They were responsible for burning alive Turkish conscript Sefter Tas and Fethi Sahin, a Turkish gendarmerie intelligence operative, who had reportedly infiltrated the Islamic State.

The footage sparked outrage in Turkey, as it was released when the Turkish military was suffering its worst losses in its fights against jihadists in northern Syria. A report in Long War Journal said that Turkish police raided Al Turki’s Islamic State cell in Turkey on January 27 last year, and detained six suspects, but the courts only remanded one of the cell members. The website adds: ‘Turkish officials and media have so far refrained from commenting on al Turki’s reported death in Syria.’ It is not known whether the bounty has yet been claimed from the Turkish police.
