CHILD WARNING EFFORTPOST The Brutal Killing of Joaquín, an 11 year old Boy from Ecuador [CW]

The Brutal Killing of Joaquín, an 11-Year-Old Boy

September 7, 2023 - Thursday, 11:50 AM

Guayaquil, Ecuador

A group of armed men arrived in two cars and four motorbikes at a repair shop looking to assassinate a rival. They immediately and indiscriminately - using rifles and pistols - opened fire at a group of people standing by the shop. Some managed to take cover inside the houses and shops nearby but many were caught in the crossfire.

Two men and one child died instantly at the scene. The fourth victim died at a hospital. Six were injured, including two young girls.

The target was a man (with a criminal record) who lived 3 houses from the shop, and actually survived the shooting by hiding in the trunk of a car. That's right, the sicarios couldn't even get the address right. The man had been living in that neighborhood for at least 6 years and while people heard he had some criminal history, they didn't consider him a threat.

After the incident, the local police chased after the criminals. Some residents of the 'Ciudad Perdida' and 'Mosquito' sectors even assisted the criminals by placing logs with nails on the streets to prevent police work. One of them fell from his motorbike during the chase and was arrested, but the rest eventually managed to escape on a boat that was waiting for them in Estero Salado (a estuary).

Full video of the shooting:

Who was Joaquín?

Joaquín was an 11-year-old boy, who according to his grandma was "a restless but loving boy". He loved to stay just outside the house next to the shop socializing. He was on the fifth year of Basic Education (Ecuadoran education system).

Joaquín's was the youngest and the only boy of a family of 5 children and a single mom. Three of his older sisters have mental disabilities, and his mother Maria, was hoping Joaquin was going to eventually help support the family and his sisters.

The Killing of Joaquín

That morning after returning from school, Joaquin changed out of school uniform and went outside to buy a couple of soda drinks, one for his disabled sister and one for himself. His grandma asked him to stay inside and take a nap but Joaquin refused and went outside to finish his soda.

And just as we has sitting down on the sidewalk, the criminals arrived shooting indiscriminately, Joaquin was immediately struck as he was trying to run away and died instantly. In total, he was shot 37 times 32 from 9mm handguns and 5 from .223 rifles.

Joaquín was waked at the home of his relatives and was buried on September 9, 2023, in a cemetery north of the town.

What his family said after the tragedy

His mother Maria:

Everything has been difficult for me, first it was my eldest daughter, then the next one. The third, thank God, has no problems, but the fourth also suffers from disabilities. With Joaquín's death they took away my hope of giving his sisters a better future.

His grandma Liliana:

He didn't listen to me, he went to the store to buy two 25 cent sodas, one for himself and one for his older sister. Then he sat on the sidewalk and it was just at that moment that this massacre took place that took our child away from us.

His uncle Alex:

My nephew's body was destroyed, his internal organs, his little head, it was heartbreaking, they acted mercilessly, viciously, they didn't care that he was a child, for God's sake. Why so much evil. He was beginning to live.

RIP Little Joaquín

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - On Monday, Southfield police released surveillance video and announced charges against a man who is accused of shooting a Chipotle employee on Friday.

Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren said 32-year-old Aaron Brown got into an argument with a store employee over a portion of guacamole that was not to his liking.

Chief Barren said Brown can be seen in surveillance video arguing with a store employee right before the employee was taken to the back of the store after Brown screamed at her.

That's when Barren said Brown walked behind the counter and served his own food.

"He had in his mind already that he was going to have some conflict; you seen it play out yourselves, going behind the counter and serving his own food," Chief Barren said.

A 21-year-old store employee then confronted Brown and tried to remove him from the store.

"Then he immediately grabs him by the neck and slams him into the refrigerator. Certainly, he is much bigger than the 21-year-old victim," Barren said. "But the coward that he is, he pulls out a handgun and shoots him, so it makes no sense, and we will hold him accountable," Chief Barren added.

In the surveillance video, customers can be seen running after Brown allegedly shoots the employee in the leg.

"This happens right across the street from the police station, so what's the nerve in that, and you think you're going to get away with it," Barren said.

Brown was arrested a few minutes later, less than a mile away. The police also released a video of the arrest without incident. Brown is now behind bars and facing four felonies, including assault less than murder.

The Chipotle employee is expected to make a full recovery.

Barren said he commends the customers inside the store and the store employees for their bravery.

"I appreciate the individuals who were inside the restaurant because they immediately called 911; some of them pulled their cell phones out and started taking video of the incident so we would have something right away," he said.

Dude Killed His Ex Girlfriend And Shot Himself In The Head

A 48-year-old lawyer killed his ex-partner with two shots inside the garage of a building in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo. The woman was identified as Michelli Stefani do Nascimento, 27 years old. After the crime, Vicente Nogueira Gumbis de Souza shot himself in the mouth and died at the scene. The case was registered as a femicide at the Police Station for the Defense of Women.

The crime took place in a building located on Rua Particular Lélia, in the Aparecida neighborhood, on Tuesday night (14). According to the Civil Police, an employee of the building called the authorities through the Military Police Operations Center (Copom) and reported that there was a person lying in the building's garage.

At the scene, police officers found that there was a man lying on the ground, with a gun next to his left leg and a woman inside a car. Both people had injuries to their faces. The Mobile Emergency Service (Samu) was called and, after medical evaluation, rescuers confirmed the death of the two people.

Authorities requested images of the closed security circuit of the condominium and, specifically, of the building's parking lot, where the two people were found. Through the videos, it was possible to understand what happened in the place.

According to police, the woman arrived at the building around 7 pm and stopped the vehicle in the garage. She got out of the car, removed two suitcases from the trunk and placed them on the floor. The former companion was also in the parking lot and seemed to be waiting for the victim at the scene. According to police, he was anxious as he walked from side to side.

After the victim returned to the car, Vicente approached the driver's side window and shot the woman twice. In the sequence, he put the gun in the direction of his mouth and squeezed the trigger, falling beside the victim's car.

The police kept the site preserved for the work of expertise and investigation. After the release of the expertise, two cell phones were seized, one belonging to Michelli and the other to Vicente, in addition to the weapon used in the crime.

The case was registered as a feminicide, followed by suicide, at the Santos Women's Police Station and will be investigated.

EFFORTPOST Radio anchor shot dead during live Facebook broadcast in the Philippines

Story

The gunman gained entry to the home-based radio station of Juan Jumalon, a provincial news broadcaster known also as DJ Johnny Walker, by pretending to be a listener. He then shot him twice during a live morning broadcast in Calamba town in Misamis Occidental province. The assailant shot Jumalon through his mouth. The bullet slug entered the victim's mouth and exited at the back of his head, investigators said. Jumalon's family and police rushed the victim to Calamba District Hospital but the broadcaster was pronounced dead upon arrival. The attacker snatched the victim's gold necklace before fleeing on a motorcycle with a companion who had been waiting outside.

The Philippines has long been regarded as one of the most dangerous places for journalists in the world.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. strongly condemned the shooting and said he ordered the national police to track down, arrest and prosecute the killers.

"Attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy and those who threaten the freedom of the press will face the full consequences of their actions," Marcos said in a statement. The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, a press freedom watchdog, said Jumalon was the 199th journalist to be killed in the country since 1986, when democracy returned after a "People Power" uprising toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos, the father of the current president, and forced him and his family into U.S. exile. "The attack is even more condemnable since it happened at Jumalon's own home, which also served as the radio station," the watchdog said.

A video of the attack shows the bespectacled Jumalon, 57, pausing and looking upward at something away from the camera before two shots rang out. He slumped back bloodied in his chair as a background music played on. The BBC reported that the DJ's wife took him to hospital immediately after the incident, but he was pronounced dead on the way to a hospital.

The attacker was not seen on the Facebook livestream but police said they were checking if security cameras installed in the house and at his neighbors recorded anything. Captain Deore Ragonio, police chief in Calamba municipality, said they were investigating a motive for the killing. They were not aware of any previous threats against Jumalon's life.

"He tackles mostly current events and is not known to have criticized anyone in his broadcasts," Ragonio told AFP.

Jumalon used the name "DJ Johnny Walker" in his Cebuano-language show at the 94.7 Gold FM Calamba station.

His broadcasts were also aired on the station's Facebook page, which has 2,400 followers. A video of the DJ was posted as recently as Oct. 29 on the radio station's Facebook page.

Attacks on journalists in the Philippines

In 2009, members of a powerful political clan and their associates gunned down 58 people, including 32 media workers, in a brazen execution-style attack in southern Maguindanao province. It was the deadliest single attack on journalists in recent history.

While the mass killing was later linked to a violent electoral rivalry common in many rural areas, it also showcased the threats faced by journalists in the Philippines. A surfeit of unlicensed guns and private armies controlled by powerful clans and weak law enforcement in rural regions are among the security concerns journalists face in the poverty-stricken Southeast Asian country.

Despite the Philippines being one of most liberal Asian countries for journalists, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) had said that it is one of the world's deadliest for them, adding that violence against them continued even with the establishment of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) in 2016. In its press freedom index for 2022, the country, out of 180 evaluated by RSF, ranks 147th. Prior to that, the 2009 Maguindanao massacre caused the country to be ranked 156th by RSF the following year; 3rd in the Global Impunity Index (GII) since then until 2014, the country's worst; and to be listed as well in that year the world's deadliest for journalists; all by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). The country had been on its list of the twenty deadliest from 2007 until being excluded in 2015. In 2018, the country was given a special citation as one of those with an improved ranking. Likewise, the country was reported by the RSF as one of the five deadliest countries for journalists in the world from the mid-2010s until being delisted in 2018. One of the causes is the PTFoMS' immediate action on various cases of killings and threats against the press.

The country, along with five others, has been in the GII since its launch by CPJ in 2008. The index measures deliberate, work-related killings of journalists, beginning from ten years prior. In the 2023 list, the country ranks 8th in terms of impunity in the killings, moving down from 7th in 2019–2022, and 4th in 2015.

Based on the data by the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), 199 media workers have been killed since 1986, with all deaths included were in relation to their job. The highest number was under the administration of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo with 103; including 32 of those murdered in Maguindanao in what was called the world's worst single attack on journalists, which made the year 2009 the deadliest for them.

Meanwhile, other groups also document such. A data from the CPJ shows 159 killed since 1992; UNESCO reported 117 since 1996, with majority of them having the state's publicized responses to Director General's request for information on judicial follow-up. Both includes the most recent, the death of Juan Jumalon in November 2023.

Prior to Jumalon's death, PTFoMS reported that there were 142 work-related killings, also since 1986.

RSF, on the other hand, documents those considered directly work-related a little less than that by NUJP.
