The murder of Shamil Odamanov is a viral beheading video in which two captured Russian men are shown to be murdered by decapitation and gunfire. It was uploaded on YouTube by the members of Russian neo-Nazi groups in 2007. Widely known as The Russian neo-Nazi beheading video (Russian: Казнь таджика и дагестанца - The Execution of a Tajiki and a Dagestani), the incident was considered a cold case until 2020.

Background:

In January 2008, the identity of one of the victims in the video was confirmed by his relatives, revealing that the young man who was brutally beheaded was Shamil Umakhanovich Odamanov, a resident of the Dagestani village of Sultan-Yangi-Yurt who had moved to Moscow for work and had lost all contact with his family since April 2007. The first mention of his identification was in Timur Mustafayev's article "Cinema and Murids" published in the Dagestani weekly Chernovik in February 2008. However, it was not until June 2008 that the execution video received attention on federal news channels. A few days after Mustafayev's article, the "Manifesto of the NSPR" was published by a certain "commander Branislav" claiming that the NSPR's August 2007 statement was not written by the actual murderers, and that the real killers did not recognize any political leadership. As proof of their involvement in the murder, "Branislav" attached two exclusive photos from the murder scene to the manifesto. The NSPR stated that their statements would always be distributed along with the video as evidence, and that any previously unpublished information would be presented as proof.

A documentary film titled "Credit for Murder" was released in mid-2015, directed by Vlady Antonevicz. The film presented a theory that the double murder in the woods was carried out by members of the Russian neo-Nazi groups Format18 and the N.S.S. ("National Socialist Society"). In 2016, Antonevicz openly named the three participants in the murder, Maxim "Tesak" Martsinkevich, Sergei "Malyuta" Korotkikh, and Dmitry Rumyantsev, with Korotkikh being the one who beheaded Shamil Odamanov, while Martsinkevich filmed the execution. These findings were officially confirmed by the police in 2021. Antonevicz stated that after years of investigation, he wrote a letter to the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, to bring attention to this murder, and subsequently testified before the Investigative Committee in Moscow. According to the filmmaker, Sergei "Malyuta" Korotkikh, one of the leaders of the N.S.S, was an agent-provocateur who worked for the Russian FSB. Antonevicz linked the publication of the murder video to the wave of ethnic killings that occurred in Russia six months later, on the eve of the 2008 presidential elections.

Myanmar's publicly mandated National Unity Government (NUG) has been carrying out a probe into the execution of a civilian by members of a resistance force under its command near Sagaing Region's border with India.

A video emerged on social media in which around a dozen armed men and women are seen beating a woman before shooting her dead in the middle of a road.

Naing Htoo Aung, secretary of the NUG's defence ministry, told Myanmar Now that the incident happened in the town of Tamu in June and that at least some of the alleged perpetrators belonged to the 4th Battalion of the Tamu District chapter of the anti-junta People's Defence Force (PDF).

He said that the ministry is investigating the killing and has directed the battalion commander to place three members who were involved—two men and one woman—in detention.

Further details regarding both the probe and how the NUG will take action against the other PDF members seen in the video were still unclear at the time of reporting. Naing Htoo Aung also said that the ministry was not aware of the incident prior to the video's circulation on social media.

The victim in the more than three minutes of footage was identified as 25-year-old Aye Mar Tun. Members of the resistance force are seen repeatedly punching her in the head, kicking her, pulling her hair and hitting her with a rifle butt, all while she is handcuffed.

Her face swollen, she is seen crying and begging them to stop.

A woman slaps her and orders her to admit she was an informant.

To this she replies, “I wasn't,” before her speaking becomes inaudible due to the continued abuse.

One of the armed individuals is heard saying to another member who attacked her, “You don't need to punch her that much.”

He then says to the victim, “You like money that much, huh?” in a reference to the allegation that she had worked for the military.

After the beating, the perpetrators blindfold Aye Mar Tun by placing a black face mask over her eyes, and remove her handcuffs. They then order her to kneel in the middle of a road and to put both of her hands behind her head.

Using a rifle, a member of the group then shoots her once from behind at close range, only the barrel of the gun visible in the video's frame. Aye Mar Tun immediately falls forward. The gunman then walks over to her body, and, standing over her, shoots her in the head four more times, leaving her skull visibly broken.

At this point, the footage ends.

“We cannot accept such a hideous [crime]. Even if they want to take action against the woman, it must be in line with the code of conduct or they must form a tribunal,” the NUG's Naing Htoo Aung said.

It must be admitted that pickaxe executions always send a chill down your spine. In this case, the film shows a young man lying in his own grave, patiently waiting for the inevitable.

The worst thing is that he is perfectly aware of what awaits him, and the prepared pick is in his sight. After a moment of uncomfortable waiting, the skull is split open with a few sweeping blows, leaving no doubt as to the happy ending of this story.

Displayed, second then first, you're seeing what was an african extremist group disabling and bleeding out a frightened villager who begged for his life as he resisted being bled like a pig, but to no avail his throat was slit.

Now with him disabled, they bring in the kid. The child works tirelessly to hack away at the non-believer's head until eventually it comes loose.

When I was his age I was playing with toys and riding bikes, I only wish I coulda been so blessed as to be given an opportunity to become a real man so soon. What a lucky kid.

I really wish I knew the back story for this video. I have never seen a man face death so stoically. I have heard rumors that it was a father killed as collateral for his son's betrayal/mistake within his gang, but that could be completely far off. If anyone knows the name of the victim or has any links, it would be greatly appreciated. Either way, this video is very haunting to me, and, even though it has probably been posted before, I haven't seen it in a very long time.
