This execution took place in Benin, in Mid-Western State (currently Delta State) in Nigeria, on 27th of June 1968. The two officers, whose names were withheld, were accused of killing four unarmed Igbo (Biafran) civilians in Ogwashi-Uku near Asaba. The public execution attracted around 10,000 people, who gathered at King's Square. Even though it was planned for 5 PM, the spectators started to gather on the square already at 11 AM.
One of the most aesthetic firing squads I've seen!
About this dude:
[...] His leg, which was heavy with bandages, was hanging as he was tied next to the drums of doom. The explanation for the bandage was that he sustained gunshot injuries when he made attempts to escape the day before his execution. Next was another man, dark and tall, he was in his army uniform. They marched him to the stake and promptly tied him up. The armed squad then broke into two groups, took positions in front of the two condemned men and aimed their cocked guns. But it was not time to fire yet.
Then, Brigade Commander, Major S. Adeniun read the charges for everyone to hear. He reminded them that these two officers were found guilty of murder, and as the military tradition required, they should face the firing squad.
As you two were comissioned officers, I charged under NA [Nigerian Army] Ordinance Act, Section 72 of 1950, civil offences. In that, at Ogwashi-Uku on or about July 1968 did conspire together and thereby killed four innocent civilians without an order from the military authorities, and the [inaudible] is death by firing squad.
After the bugle sounded ‘The Last Call', two convicts were executed. In the video, you can see the coffins being quickly brought to the spot.
Info about this execution is scarce, although it seems to have importance as an example in the case against Dusko Tadic, Bosnian Serb and a convicted war criminal.
