On 28 September 2002, environmental activist Haïdar El Ali and his diving team explored the disaster area. They saw no survivors, but many bodies of men, women and children inside the ship. 300 corpses trapped inside were freed. Another 100 that were around the ship were also recovered. 551 dead bodies were recovered in total. Of that number, 93 were identifiable and given back to families.

A young man was found dead Monday after he slipped off a party boat into a canal and drowned in southern Mexico City.
José Manuel Romero Reyes, 20, joined his friends Sunday for a day of eating and drinking along the ancient Xochimilco canal, which was built by the Aztecs.
A cellphone video captured the moment a jubilant Romero Reyes and a male friend decided to stand over the edge of two gondola-like boats while celebrating a friend's birthday.
Romero Reyes' friend then hopped into the other boat and continued to dance while Romero Reyes remained perched atop the raft and holding on to the side.
