A Nicaraguan man's tragic drowning was captured on camera Sunday - the result of a failed bid to illegally cross the Mexico - United States border.
C.R, 53, and his friend E.C, 42, were seen struggling to stay afloat as the Rio Grande's current picked up strength between Piedras Negras, Coahuila, and Eagle Pass, Texas.
A news camera crew spotted C, a former radio host, hanging on to a concrete column in the middle of the river while R. battled the current and tried to keep his head above water. He later went under as Texas National Guard soldiers looked on.
He left his family behind in December 2021 after he received death threats for covering an government demonstration and was among several migrants who paid a smuggler $3,000 to be taken to Piedras Negras, Coahuila, in order to reach Texas
R. was swept down the international waterway and his body found near an islet further down the river.
C. somehow continued on and made it to a second set of concrete pillars under a bridge, where he sat on top of a tree branch.

Chetan Khatik, 28, Sudarshan Chandel, 22, and Radheyshyam Khatik, 27, had stopped for a swim in a local pond during a bike ride through in Rajasthan, India.
After one of them steps into the deep pond, he starts to struggle, and the other two jump out into the deep end to help him.
When they failed to return home, their family members contacted the police, who launched a hunt and found the men had drowned at the pond.
Police officer Rajender Godara identified the men and said: 'The victims were relatives and knew each other well.'
Police found the mobile phone on the edge of the pond and found that it had taken less than three minutes for all the men to drown.
Ramesh Chandel, a friend of the trio, said: 'Chetan seems to have to gone towards the deep end of the pond and started drowning. 'Radhey Shyam and Sudarshan went to save him and lost their lives as well.'

The cause of his drowning is debated. some say the man was unaware that the water was contaminated (judging by the color of the water) so as soon as he jumped in, he was paralyzed by the contaminated water and drowned but the others say he drowned because he was electrocuted by the electric pole or wire nearby. the latter is more believable. either way RIP.

MARIVELES, Bataan, Philippines β A man died this Sunday after his friend pushed him into a hot spring, causing him to drown.
According to some eyewitnesses, the victim, Kevin Reyes, 25, managed to swim up for a while.
"When he was pushed, he struggled for about 3 minutes, then he managed to swim up and cursed," said a witness.
After that, the victim did not re-emerge.
Because of the rain, the search operation took almost 2 hours before Reyes' body was recovered.
According to town officials, they are still investigating if the friends had been drinking when the incident happened.
Authorities are still investigating to find out if the friend who pushed was responsible.
A copy of the victim's death certificate is also being awaited to find out the true cause of his death.
