Man killed by his mother's falling coffin in Indonesia

An Indonesian man has died after his mother's coffin fell from a funeral tower and crushed him during a service on the island of Sulawesi, police said on Sunday.

Samen Kondorura, 40, died when pallbearers lost their footing while carrying the coffin up a bamboo ladder in the Parinding valley in North Toraja district.

The casket fell as the group hoisted it onto a lakkian, an ornately carved tower where the deceased is placed before elaborate traditional funeral rites.

“As the mother's coffin was being raised to the lakkian, suddenly the ladder shifted and collapsed, the coffin fell and hit the victim,” Julianto Sirait, chief police commissioner at Tana Toraja, said.

Sirait said the accident happened because the ladder was not properly reinforced but the family has declined to press charges.

The body of Kondorura is now resting alongside his mother Berta, he added.

When ethnic Torajans die, local residents hold funerals that can last for days and involve music, dance and the sacrifice of water buffalo.

A factory worker in India was killed after his boss shot a burst of compressed air up his butt as a prank, destroying the man’s internal organs.

The incident happened in a foundry in the Kolhapur district of Maharashtra, India, earlier this month. As the Mirror reported, a man named Aditya Jadhav was engaging in some lighthearted pranks with his supervisor when the boss jokingly held an air pressure hose to the man’s back, then put it down his pants and released a blast of pressurized air.

Though it was meant as a joke, Jadhav was seriously injured and fell to the floor in pain, the report noted. The blast had accidentally sent the air up the man’s rear end, causing serious damage to his organs. Jadhav was rushed to a hospital, but died 15 days later from his injuries.

Video of the incident has spread around the internet, gaining some viral attention for its bizarre nature, and news outlets across the globe have reported on the factory worker’s strange death.

This is not the only time that a prank has accidentally turned fatal. Back in 2014, another viral video showed a group of students prank a classmate by wrapping him in cling wrap. As the Mirror reported, 17-year-old Sergei Casper was carried to a bathroom and dunked feet-first into a toilet, then brought back to his classroom.

But back inside the room, the prank took a horrible turn. While his legs were still bound, Casper attempted to hop but lost his balance, falling and striking his neck on the side of the teacher’s desk. Classmates began to laugh, not realizing that the fall had crushed the student’s throat.

They soon realized that Casper was badly hurt, and the student was rushed to a hospital but died of his injuries.

“He was a good guy, he never did anything bad to anyone and he was my friend. But the others just picked on him all the time,” said one of the student’s friends. “They seemed to think it was hilarious, and then they decided to take their prize back to the classroom where although the teacher was sitting at her desk, she did absolutely nothing to help him.”

Man was just released from prison, gets released from life in his celebration thanks to his friend (Jordan)

Sari Salem Wardat, a father of five, had been serving an eight-month prison sentence for carrying an unlicensed weapon and resisting arrest, according to police and relatives, and was released two weeks early in line with special government measures to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus in Jordan. Police sources told Al Jazeera that Sari was a drug dealer and smuggler.

Ahmad Wardat is a member of Jordanian Armed Forces. Relatives who witnessed the shooting said he was using a seven-millimetre modified gun that frequently jammed. The relatives said that Ahmad “was not very bright”. They described a separate occasion several years ago when he fired a pump-action pellet shotgun during a wedding, wounding six people.

Relatives said the shooter said he thought he had fired all of his bullets not knowing that the last bullet had jammed in the magazine that killed Sari.

Hassan Wardat, a distant relative of both men, told Al Jazeera that the families of both men struck an ”Atwa” or a tribal peace agreement, after the shooting to prevent a potential “revenge killing” against the family of the shooter. “Immediately after the shooting, Awad, Sari’s brother, stood among the gathered crowd and said he forgave the shooter and his family for his brother’s blood”

The shooter has been detained and will likely face a murder charge, the police said.

thanks to @lft for the find!

1. Treat every gun as if it's loaded

2. don't point the gun at anything you are not willing to destroy

3. keep your fucking finger off the trigger until you're sure of your target

4. know your target and what's behind it

Lathes are exceptionally useful for cutting metal or wood, but if used improperly they can be incredibly dangerous. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says that the most common injuries caused by lathe accidents are broken fingers, cuts to the hands and hot shrapnel in the eyes. When using a lathe, it’s important to take safety precautions such as wearing proper clothing, maintaining the proper speed and practicing safe cutting techniques.

Points to consider

  • Lathes can easily catch long sleeves and loose clothing and become incredibly dangerous.

  • Correct dress is important, remove rings and watches, roll sleeves above elbows.

  • Avoid reaching across the rotating chuck or work piece.

  • Always stop the lathe before making adjustments.

  • Always wear protective eye protection.
